Charting your BBT will help you to know whether:

• you were in fact pregnant before you had what you thought was a ‘late’ period (therefore you are fertile!)
• in any particular cycle you are still fertile as noted by low temperatures
• you have a thyroid problem (overactive or underactive), that needs to be addressed to make conception easier
• your luteal phase is long enough for the egg to be implanted (10 days minimum is required)
• during your luteal phase your progesterone levels are high enough
• you are pregnant! as seen by more than 18 high temperatures
• you are ovulating
• you may be in danger of miscarrying as recorded by a sudden drop in temperatures after an apparent conception

As you can see there is nothing above about helping you decide whether this is your most fertile time to get pregnant. Moreover using the basal body method for fertility timing can actually impede efforts at conception, because by the time a change in temperature is recorded it’s usually too late as the egg has died and gone.

That said however, BBT recording does definitely play its role in helping you to conceive as seen in the above mentioned bullet points.

If the man has a normal sperm count then couples should have intercourse daily when the wet egg white fluid is present and should continue until the fertile window is closed (indicated by a rise in basal temperature).
